Pemandu quashes GST rumours

PETALING JAYA: The much criticised goods and services tax (GST) has not been implemented on the sly as has been claimed by several quarters, as the government is still in the process of educating the public on VAT (value added tax), said the government’s Performance Management and Delivery Unit (Pemandu) today.
Pemandu’s finance unit made this statement today to quash rumours that the GST had been implemented by the Barisan Nasional government without the people’s knowledge.
“For the time being, the status quo is per our reports that we are in the process of educating the public on VAT, which is value added tax,” a Pemandu senior manager who gave his name as only Foong, told FMT today.
Asked as to when the government was planning to implement the GST, Foong said there was no set date.
“We are referring the GST to the cabinet, but we have yet to reach a decision as to when to implement it,” he said.
Last week, it was announced that Malaysia will be able to rake in an additional income of up to RM27 billion if the proposed GST is implemented at 7%, similar to neighbouring Singapore.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Idris Jala said at a forum that the new taxation mechanism can guarantee additional revenue of RM20 billion to RM27 billion, at maturity.
He added education on the GST was all about how it benefits the country’s economy as well as for Malaysians to understand and accept the taxation mechanism moving forward.
Last week, PKR trade and investment bureau chief Wong Chen has called on the government to do away with unnecessary mega projects and corruption before introducing the GST.
Rebuking the propose 7%, Wong said Malaysia can avert a major financial meltdown if the government eliminates mega projects and weeds out corruption.
Jala’s remarks on the GST, coming on the heels of the formation of Najib Tun Razak’s new cabinet, also led to speculation that the government had implemented the GST.

Abolish senate, says Karpal

GEORGE TOWN: DAP chairman Karpal Singh wants the Senate or Dewan Negara to be abolished as it no longer served any purpose.
The party’s senior parliamentarian said the Senate was no longer necessary in today’s fast changing political climate and urged the government emulate the Singapore style of a single house of representatives.
Unlike the Senate, he said the Dewan Rakyator the lower house stood a on high moral ground and was supreme because its members were directly elected by the people.
“The Federal Constitution should be amended to abolish the Senate. A unicameral house with single legislative chamber, like in Singapore, would be best suited in the interest of the public,” Karpal told newsmen here today.
He said Senators sit in the Parliament via back door appointments and are not directly elected by the people in public polls.
He said Senate appointments encouraged those rejected by the people and others to be brought into Parliament via the back door.
He said such personalities should be shown the exit door, lamenting the fact that even Pakatan Rakyat states were also appointing back door parliamentarians.
He said parliamentarians should be elected, not appointed to represent the people, adding that the remuneration given to Senators was a waste of taxpayers’ money.
“There is no need for the Senate. It does not serve any useful purpose. It is an unnecessary expense borne by the people. The Senate should be abolished,” he said.
The Dewan Negara has 70 senators, 26 of whom are elected by the state legislative assemblies, with two senators for each state in the federation.
“The remaining 44, including four, to represent the federal territories of Kuala Lumpur and Labuan, are appointed by His Majesty the King.
Those appointed must have rendered outstanding service in commerce, industry, agriculture, cultural or social activities, or be representatives of racial minorities, or have competence in representing the interests of the natives of Peninsular and Borneo states of Sabah and Sarawak.
Karpal, the three-term Bukit Gelugor MP, described the appointment of unelected ministers Abdul Wahid Omar, Idris Jala and Paul Low Seng Kwan, and deputy ministers P Waythamoorthy, J Loga Bala Mohan, Ahmad Bashar Md Hanapiah as a mockery.
He said there was a dire need for ministers and deputy ministers to be elected directly to Dewan Rakyat before they are appointed to the Cabinet.
“Personalities, who did not have the people’s backing though direct election, have no moral right to sit in the Cabinet,” said Karpal.

I personally agreed with YB Karpal Singh point of view as by democracy only the candidates that elected by the people should have the authorities to represent the rakyat in Malaysia. This mean the quality of each candidate will be improve and only the candidate that are caliber will be contesting in the election.

Malaysia's Home Minister says remarks in Utusan were "not racist, just practical

PETALING JAYA - Malaysia's Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has defended his recent statement which called for groups which did not accept the country's political system to migrate to countries with systems that suit them.

The Umno vice-president, who has been criticized for the remarks published in the Utusan earlier this week, said his statement was taken out of context.

"I actually said those who are not confident of our political system to berhijrah to countries with political systems that suited them.

"I am not being racist... I am just being practical in saying such groups should go to countries where they can translate their political beliefs into reality," he said on Friday.

Dr Ahmad Zahid said people should not read the statement out of context, urging readers to read the full Utusan Malaysia article. Utusan is an Umno-owned, Malay language daily.

He explained that Malaysia inherited the Commonwealth system and those who think that the system in the United States or other countries were more suitable could migrate there.

Dr Ahmad Zahid also lambasted the Opposition for disputing the general election results but recognising the results for Selangor, Penang and Kelantan, where they won.

"They are disputing the results very selectively," he said.

Frankly speaking, if this is the statement he mean to give out then i feel there is nothing wrong with it. It will be his personal view but i am  sure is not the government saying

Kerukunan nasional jangan balas dendam

Malaysian Article By Rosheen Fatima

This is one of the article that I think the writer have her point. Would like to share to all of you for your digestion

Democracy doesn't happen overnight, democracy is a journey”

I'm going to say something that most people are not going to like hearing, and I'm saying this because of the huge amount of black on my facebook wall.

Did you, any of you, really think that PR would sweep the elections? Put aside the dirty campaigning, and election tactics, did you really think PR would win?

From what i've seen over social media over the last few months, I thought that PR would win more seats. I believed that there would be a bigger change, I believed that the people would put into action what they were so vocal (online) about. But then I stopped myself and looked at the people in my social circles, the people I interact with online. We are a tiny, tiny middle class online savvy minority. It is because your social circle expected a certain outcome that you did too. But we do not represent the majority, and we don't even interact with them. Do you really expect to predict how they will vote? My father is Sarawakian, and I lived there for many years of my life. I lived in Kuching, but I know that in the interior and rural areas there are so many Malaysians who are not like you, who are not like me. Did I expect them to vote for PR, no. Did I expect them to vote for BN, yes. Why? Because that is all they see, that is what they know, the bribe money that they get means so much to them because they have close to nothing. And it's sad to say that that is the majority that we do not know.

So instead of turning your profile pictures black, if you really believe in change and the party you support, start planning now. Start the campaign to win the hearts of the people outside the urban areas, the people in the heartland. We know what's going on, they don't. Go talk to them.

And Malaysians, get to know the other Malaysia. Don't criticize them for voting the way they feel is right. Speak to them, get to know them, understand their plight, their needs, their wants. Then campaigns to them, the urbanites are practically campaigning for you already.

And don't wait until a few months before the elections to campaign. Start now. Start fighting for measures to be put in place for a better electoral system now. Start making those in power more accountable for their actions. Start making your candidates accountable for the promises they made. Stop allowing mudslinging and racism and sexism to flourish in our government. You won't stand for it, make your candidate not stand for it. Make them fight for a proper democracy over the next 5 years. Then we can see a change. It doesn't happen overnight. it doesn't come with one day every five years. And it definitely won't come if you give up.

And make the change in you.
You want our politicians to stop being racist and sexist, then stop doing it yourself.
You want our government to stop being corrupt, then stop corruption in your own life.
You want cleanliness and transparency in our country, live clean, live transparent.
You are one of the atoms that make up Malaysia, don't ask for the changes that you don't live by.
Don't be a hypocrite and ask the people in power to be any different from you.

Take the small victories. No one ever said that the journey would be short or easy.
Did anyone ever think that PR would make inroads into the birthplace of UMNO, Johor? I didn't, but they did.
Did anyone expect 80% of registered voters to turn out to vote? I didn't, but they did.

In 2003, BN won 198 seats.
In 2008, BN won 140 seats.
In 2013, BN won (as of time of posting) 132 seats (with 6 seats uncalled).
So whatever it is, it is still a small victory for PR.
And now the question is what will the numbers be in 2018?

Gandhi took 32 years to fight for independence.
Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years in the fight to end apartheid.

And we've been trying for what 10 years?
Come on Malaysia, grow up.
Yes, you're sad, but a fight is a fight, it goes on.

Democracy doesn't happen overnight, democracy is a journey.
Just because there are hurdles and obstacles in your way doesn't mean you give up.
You train for the next race.
And maybe that one you'll win.
